Astigmatism Lens Implants
In a healthy human eye, the cornea is cylindrically shaped, like a basketball. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is not symmetrical and is shaped more like an egg. When light passes through a cornea affected by astigmatism, the image is not focused on the retina causing blurred or double vision.
How Can An IOL Correct Both Cataracts And Astigmatism?
IOLs come in a number of variations. If you have astigmatism, your surgeon may recommend you receive a toric IOL. A toric IOL replaces the crystalline lens and is specifically chosen by your surgeon to correct your unique cornea curvature.
The TECNIS® Toric IOL is designed to:
- Reduce or eliminate corneal astigmatism and significantly improve distance vision
- Correct for both cataracts and astigmatism at the same time
- Provide the QUALITY distance vision you need
In 2005, the FDA approved the astigmatism correcting toric lens implant for patients suffering from cataracts and astigmatism. Toric lens implants are used to correct both conditions during one procedure. At the Brumm Eye Center, we use the TECNIS Toric and AcrySof Toric lenses to correct astigmatism during cataract surgery. These implants are foldable, single piece lenses that are implanted into the eye during cataract surgery to replace the cloudy cataract lens. Toric lenses significantly correct corneal astigmatism and improve the distance vision after surgery. These intraocular lenses help to reduce the dependency on eyeglasses needed for distance or driving vision. Most patients only require inexpensive over the counter reading glasses for near tasks.
