Astigmatism Lens Implants
Many patients have astigmatism, a condition where the clear outer window of the eye, known as the cornea, is oblong like a football instead of round like a basketball. Patients with astigmatism wear glasses to manage this condition. The basic monofocal lens implant does not feature any correction for astigmatism, so glasses will still be required for all activities. If you have astigmatism, you may choose a Toric intraocular lens implant (IOL) to reduce this astigmatism and offer clearer vision for distance tasks, such as driving, watching T.V., watching performances or sporting events, and walking around. Anything closer than 3 feet, or the length of your outstretched fingertips, will require over-the-counter reading glasses. This includes reading, using your computer, tablet, and phone, and viewing your dashboard.
How Can An IOL Correct Both Cataracts And Astigmatism?

If you have an astigmatism, Dr. Matthew Brumm may recommend you receive a Toric IOL.
The TECNIS® Toric IOL is designed to:
- Reduce or eliminate corneal astigmatism and significantly improve distance vision
- Correct for both cataracts and astigmatism at the same time
- Provide the QUALITY distance vision you need
In 2005, the FDA approved the astigmatism correcting toric lens implant for patients suffering from cataracts and astigmatism. Toric lens implants are used to correct both conditions during one procedure. At the Brumm Eye Center, we use the TECNIS Toric to correct astigmatism during cataract surgery. These implants are foldable, single piece lenses that are implanted into the eye during cataract surgery to replace the cloudy cataract lens. Toric lenses significantly correct corneal astigmatism and improve the distance vision after surgery. These intraocular lenses help to reduce the dependency on eyeglasses needed for distance or driving vision. Most patients only require inexpensive over the counter reading glasses for near tasks.
